Stories of transformation: How energy psychology helps heal trauma

Sarah Murphy, LPC, ACP-EFT • December 20, 2023

Kristin Holthuis is a family doctor in Costa Rica who specializes in energy psychology modalities. She is an EFT mentor for ACEP’s EFT certification program and has been a Comprehensive Energy Psychology trainer and consultant. In her work, Kristin has had many experiences showing the power of energy psychology to help heal trauma.

She has directed several training programs in Costa Rica, the US and for the UN Women in Latin America institutes, NGOs, and hospitals. Programs include selfcare for caregivers and mental health professionals as well as trainings in the basics of energy psychology techniques. She shares a story of one amazing healing that happened during one of these projects.

A child in need

Kristin saw a complex case of a ten-year-old boy. When angry, he threw himself through windows and attacked caregivers with sharp objects. He also showed attacks of rage towards his peers. People feared him. No school would allow him to attend. He definitely was not up for adoption.

When he was not angry, he was a friendly kid. His multiple medications and therapies did not help much to change his violent behavior.

Energy psychology can help heal trauma.

During the first session, Kristin taught his primary caregivers a simple energy psychology technique. They tapped simultaneously on the side of hand and the gamut spot while saying some specific sentences whenever the boy became upset.

Releasing the rage

Kristin saw the boy and his primary caregiver and psychologist six weeks later for a follow up consultation. The boy hadn’t gone to full rage in those six weeks. Still, he would get angry, screaming and slamming doors. Nonetheless, there was improvement – he had not attacked anyone since the first session.

Exploring the anger with the boy, he said he would get angry “every time someone complains about me to Auntie.” (Auntie is the name given to the caregivers.)

Kristin immediately understood. The boy felt enraged anytime someone jeopardized the only family-like relationship this boy had left in the whole wide world.

They did one round of TTT (Trauma Tapping Technique), where Kristin gently tapped on the face, chest, and fingers of the boy, while saying a few words about the issue. After one round of TTT his anger about his peers’ taunts subsided completely.

Uncovering and clearing deep sadness

After the anger cleared, the boy felt a deep sadness. He said, “My mom gave me away like I was a piece of garbage and never came back nor asked for me.”

They did one more round of TTT, focusing on the deep sadness, while Kristin said some gentle words about his sadness about his mom giving him away.

“It is not your fault that your mom couldn’t take care of you, she was too young, you are a good boy, none of this is your fault,” she said to him.

Then the boy looked happy and said, “Well, Auntie Maria loves me very much.”

Even when focusing on the separation with his mom, he could not feel sadness anymore.

Somehow, he re-signified his relationship with his mother to the possibilities offered in the present with caregivers with whom he had a good relationship.

Back to school and a new family

After this second session, he was never triggered in the same way again. He was able to get off all his medication, go back to school, and about a year later he was successfully adopted.

The whole therapy process lasted two sessions of 30 minutes each. Wow.

Looking forward

Can you imagine what a difference we could make if social service agencies and hospitals around the world used energy psychology techniques like these? What a difference for children in hospital settings, so vulnerable and scared, having tools like these to calm down and feel less afraid. And providers like Kristin soothing children who are parentless, recognizing that much of the anger they may display is a scrambled reaction to the thread and need for connection.

Thanks to Kristin Holthuis for sharing her story, and more importantly, for doing her work. Many ACEP members have stories of hope and healing. Let’s share them! When we tell our stories, we can help turn the tide toward away from a “crime and punishment” model toward powerful, healing, loving methods grounded in energy psychology.

After retiring from the military, I conducted individual and group therapy with combat veterans as a clinical social worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at the VET Center in Warwick, RI. In my work, I've had many experiences showing the power of energy psychology to help heal trauma . One of these amazing stories occurred during my tenure at the VA. Veteran suffers from PTSD A 70-year old Vietnam Veteran suffered for 45 years from chronic PTSD as a result of life-threatening events he endured and injuries he sustained during combat. Let's call him Joe (not his real name). His symptoms included nightmares and waking up profusely sweating every night since he returned from the war 45 years ago. Joe also had insomnia and anger issues. Conventional therapies and medication were not able to alleviate the adverse impact of his trauma. Unfortunately, Joe's experience is common among a vast number of Veterans receiving treatment for PTSD at the VA. Energy psychology resolves trauma-related symptoms In the first energy psychology session, I introduced Joe to Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and explained the process and its efficacy. During the next 6 sessions, he tapped on the EFT meridian points for 2-3 rounds on each combat trauma we addressed. While he tapped, I guided him to verbally release related negative emotions. We did this until he no longer experienced any disturbance associated with these challenging events, as determined by muscle testing. The results were inspiring. At the end of six 50-minute sessions, Joe reported that his nightmares and night sweats completely stopped, and he felt more rested, peaceful, and significantly less anxious. Joe was even able to stop taking most of his anxiety and depression medication. His wife said she noticed a huge positive shift in his demeanor. Lasting results Over the next 3 years, Joe used EFT on his own to clear other developmental traumas and negative core beliefs. During this time, he only had four nightmares during one two-week period, which were triggered by watching a war movie. Afterwards, he did not have any recurrence of PTSD symptoms. Joe felt joy that he did not experience previously, and he was more emotionally open and affectionate with his wife. This heart-warming story shows the power of EFT to heal rapidly and effectively, with results that last. It's why I love using it. Going forward What a difference could be made with Veterans and their families if the VA and Department of Defense (DOD) used energy psychology techniques like these! They would be free of the devastating impact of PTSD, have better relationships and an improved quality of life. Many ACEP members have stories of hope and healing. Let’s share them! In our quest for optimal health, longevity, and deeper connection, we often overlook the microscopic powerhouses driving every function within our bodies: the mitochondria. These remarkable cellular structures don't just produce energy—they may hold the key to extended lifespan, enhanced consciousness, and perhaps even our spiritual experiences.
